New EV Charger Grants: Could You Get Up to £500 Towards Your Installation?

If you’ve been considering installing an EV charger at home or at your workplace, now could be a good time to take another look.

Changes to the UK Government’s electric vehicle chargepoint grants mean that from 1 April 2026, eligible households, landlords and workplaces can receive increased financial support towards the cost of installing EV charging.

Some grants now offer up to £500 per charging socket, subject to eligibility.

At SJM Renewables, we’ve broken down what’s currently available and who could benefit.

Who Can Get an EV Charger Grant?

Not every homeowner will qualify, so it’s important to understand the different schemes before arranging an installation.

Own a House With a Driveway?

If you own and live in a standard house with private off-street parking, there is currently no general government grant towards installing a home EV charger.

However, other households—including renters and people living in flats—may qualify.

Own a Flat or Rent Your Home?

If you own and live in a flat or rent a residential property and have access to private, off-street parking, you could receive:

75% towards the cost of purchasing and installing an eligible EV charger, up to £500.

You’ll need to meet the scheme’s eligibility requirements, including requirements relating to your vehicle and parking space.

No Driveway? You Could Still Qualify

There is also support available for households that rely on on-street parking.

Eligible households can receive up to £500 towards installing a home chargepoint and an approved cross-pavement charging solution.

This is designed to provide a safer way of getting a charging cable from your property to your vehicle without simply trailing a loose cable across the pavement.

The installation and cross-pavement solution must meet the relevant requirements, and eligibility should always be confirmed before work begins.

EV Charger Grants for Landlords

Landlords could also benefit from the current funding.

Eligible residential landlords can receive 75% of the cost of purchasing and installing EV chargepoints, up to £500 per socket.

For landlords and property managers looking after multiple properties, this could provide a valuable opportunity to improve their properties while preparing for the continued growth of electric vehicles.

What About Businesses?

There’s good news for commercial customers too.

Through the Government’s Workplace Charging Scheme, eligible businesses, charities and public-sector organisations can receive support towards installing EV chargers for employees and workplace fleets.

The scheme currently provides:

75% of eligible purchase and installation costs, up to £500 per socket, for a maximum of 40 sockets across an applicant’s sites.

For example, an eligible business installing 10 charging sockets could potentially receive up to £5,000 towards the project, subject to the scheme’s 75% funding limit and other eligibility requirements.

For businesses considering electrifying their fleet or offering workplace charging to employees, this could make installing EV infrastructure considerably more affordable.

Do I Need to Apply Before Installing My Charger?

Yes—and this is particularly important.

Depending on the scheme, customers generally need to complete the relevant application process and receive confirmation before installation takes place.

The charger and installation must also meet the Government’s requirements, including the use of an eligible chargepoint and an appropriately authorised installer.

We’d always recommend checking your eligibility before committing to an installation rather than assuming you’ll be able to claim the money afterwards.

How Long Are the Grants Available?

The current EV chargepoint grant schemes are confirmed until 31 March 2027.

Government schemes can change, however, so if you’re considering installing an EV charger, it’s worth checking the latest eligibility and funding available when you’re ready to proceed.

Is Now a Good Time to Install an EV Charger?

If you qualify for one of the schemes, the increased grants could make now an excellent time to consider installation.

A dedicated EV charger offers more than convenience. Smart chargers can allow you to schedule charging around cheaper electricity tariffs, monitor your energy consumption and, depending on the system, integrate EV charging with solar PV and battery storage.

For homeowners and businesses looking at the bigger picture, combining these technologies can help you make better use of the energy you generate and reduce reliance on the grid.
